A Bite of Cancer?
So screamed the headlines in all major Newspapers and TV channels on 24th May 2016.
A study released by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) said most bread samples taken from various sources in Delhi contained Cancer-causing chemicals! The pre-packaged breads including pav and pizza base commonly available in the market tested positive for Potassium Bromate and Potassium Iodate. Many countries have already banned one or both of these. While one of these is possibly carcinogenic to humans, the other could trigger Thyroid disorders.
Why are these used in the first place when their reactions are so well documented?
These chemicals increase the shelf-life of these breads.
This in plain language means the bread can be kept for a longer time to cover transport and stocking time. In effect we are getting stale bread. And a very unhealthy one too!
